Your last-minute family staycation ideas for the June school holidays

SINGAPORE — The mid-year school holidays are almost here (they start next week, in fact!), but you have nothing planned at all. When you’re pressed for time and in desperate need of a break, do you really want to go through the trouble of looking for flights and hotels to make that quick escape?

I don’t. I just want the most efficient way possible to get myself onto a deck chair by an infinity pool, stat. Enter the fuss-free staycation — no queues, no hassle and no headache.

And I found it when I stayed at The Westin Singapore recently. The hotel, located at Asia Square Tower 2, isn’t the typical staycation venue — for one, it’s in the Central Business District. Still, it was absolutely relaxing to breeze into the CBD on a Saturday to see tonnes of empty car park lots waiting for your humble carriage. Read more here.

So according to Serene, you should look for hotels with activity packages, book a local tour, immerse yourself in a neighbourhood, and camp out in the wild. These are things that you could do for last-minute vacation. Vacations only happen for a few days that is why you should make sure that you do something that you will enjoy. It is not necessary for you to spend a lot of money because there affordable packages out there that you could avail for you and your family.

Myths about Living in a Luxury Hotel

There are many online booking sites for luxury hotels that guarantee the best dates to the wannabe guests to save their money. When people book in upscale properties, they are definitely looking for luxurious living in hotels. However, at times there could be certain concealed stipulations, which can actually backfire and you may ultimately end up spending more bucks.

Myths related to luxury hotels are quite common. There is a popular misconception that the electronic key card of your room stores all information related to your credit card and identity. However, it has been widely refuted. There are several other myths around a luxury hotel and some of them have been busted here.

Myth 1: When any luxury hotel claims all their rooms are identical, they mean it

Irrespective of whether is an independent property or an upscale hotel, two rooms can never be exactly identical in a hotel. If you think carefully, you will realize that they cannot be. But there are many hotels that may try to convince you otherwise. Every floor in a hotel may not be structurally identical. There could be differences in terms of room sizes and the kind of views they offer. But still, they could be costing the same price because the system eyes them as identical. After all, a hotel cannot afford to keep its room empty just because it does not offer the same view as some other guest room. However, that does not mean that you should be disillusioned. So, while you make your reservation, you should be very specific about the kind of features you are looking in your room. Another important point to note here is that you should behave nicely with the hotel’s front office staff. After all, they are the people who make a decision on where to accommodate you.

Myth 2: when a hotel has sold-out its rooms, it will still have an additional guest room available

This is a myth too. In fact, when a luxury hotel is busy, it could actually have a higher number of bookings as compared to its total capacity. So, when the hotel’s staff tells you that all its rooms have been sold out for a particular night, it is actually sold out. You need to remember that it is the first priority for any hotel to have a perfect and complete fill. A perfect fill indicates that all its rooms are booked. If by chance a hotel has held back a room or couple of them that still does not signify availability for you. In an oversold situation, a hotel often books over its 100 percent capacity in most cases as it bets of a possibility of 10 percent of the guests not showing up.

Myth 3: You will get an automatic upgrade if you tell your hotel that you will be spending your honeymoon there

Now, that could be wishful thinking on your part. A good hotel always tries to make your stay a memorable one when it is a reservation for a special occasion. But you need to remember that it could be someone else’s special day too like a honeymoon, an anniversary or a birthday. Plus, there are some people who could claim anything to avail an upgrade in the hotel you need to remember that an upscale hotel will always try to help you whenever they can. Thus, you should be kind to the employees of the front desk and be sensitive about this.

Myth 4: A hotel will always give you a better deal as compared to an OTA or online travel agency

On the face value, many might think so since direct room bookings are definitely more profitable for a hotel as compared to bookings done through third parties. However, some experts claim that since many hotels enter into an agreement with these OTAs, the former could be under an obligation to not undersell their online travel agent. In fact, many good hotels have to permit their online agents to undercut their prices.

Myth 5: A hotel may not be able to cater to the food requirements of all tourists.

Nowadays hotels have halal restaurant sentosa which ensures that the food can be consumed by all tourists regardless of their food requirements.

Millennials Are Changing the Face of Luxury Living

Luxury hotel living has changed with the growing number of millennial travelers who are now moving out of their parent’s homes and making their mark on the world. These millennial travelers need different things than the normal traveler. Their bells and whistles are less tedious than the ones that the hotels would have to put up for the more traditional travelers. These millennial travelers have a few basic demands that they are satisfied with these are mainly customized travel experiences, digital convenience and most importantly they should be able to get most of the relevant information that they need from social media.

These are individuals who have never known the world without the internet. Most hotels have started to cater to these needs and have become a hit among the new generation of travelers. Millennial travelers are more than just a tourist; they are more like explorers and tend to spend more time in an area. Most of them have jobs that they can do from anywhere and hence it doesnt really matter where they live. This encourages them to live from a suitcase traveling to destinations of their choice and staying there for as long as they like.

They also have higher expectations in luxury such as having a happy hour rooftop bar in hotel which is what some of them are looking for.

Changes that hotels have made for the millennial travelers

Social media: Most travellers will choose the hotel that has caught their attention online and also hence it is very important that hotels make themselves more active on the different types of social media or risk the chance of losing out on these millennial travellers as in around 10 years these would make up almost 75% of the whole number of travellers. Another aspect of social media is the pictures and posts that the guest themselves post on social media. There are a few guests who post almost everything that they do on social media along with the room that they are staying in, the hotels lobby, and also the view that they have from their room. Thus it is very important for the hotels to make sure that the room is always presentable and looks like the pictures that they themselves would post on social media.

Customized travel experience

Millennial travelers are more likely to opt for more urban destinations. Most millennials have said that they are more likely to choose a location that is used by a mixed community and would also like to travel in the same way. The next need for the guests is a location other than their room where they can relax and work. This has caused the hotel designers to create the concept of a third place such as the pool side or the hotel lobby where the guests can work. Most often the hotel lobby is like the living room for the millennial traveler. As explorers, these travelers also like to be able to experience the local culture and traditions of the area in which they are staying. Hotels that have ties to the local culture and help their traveler get immersed in authentic local culture are a hotspot for theses millennial travelers.

Digital Convenience

The millennials are a group of individuals who have come of age with their smartphone in their hand. They use these smartphones for almost everything from making calls to surfing the internet and chatting. They expect that their travel experience should also be an extension of their mobile lives. It is very important that the hotel is able to provide the guests with great Wi-Fi connections throughout the hotel and not only in the room. There are also some hotels that have more intuitive technology integrated into their rooms that specially target the more tech savvy crowd.
